Reisen

O alarme toca. Eu aos poucos vou acordando: primeiro me estico e depois, finalmente, resolvi me levantar.

Fechei o chuveiro e, após me secar, corri para me vestir.

Sai apressadamente do vagão e preguiçosamente atravessei a estação.

Walking dreams

One o'clock in the afternoon, friday. I rush home in order to wrap up my luggage. It was almost ready the night before but I needed to leave the bathroom stuff outside the bag because...well I have to brush my teeth and stuff before travelling, right? I check my luggage again to see if I forgot something outside the night before: clothing, camera, tripod, travel papers, cash...it was all there.

In a corner of my room I found my girlfriend's bag that she left with me the day before, after all I'd pick her up at her office so she actually couldn't carry her stuff along.

On top of my bed my typical travel "uniform" comfortable jeans, a t-shirt and some roomy shoes. On the desk my wallet, the mobile phone and the sunglasses, after all there is sun in Europe, right? I emptied my backpack since it was full of college stuff, and I wouldn't need that where I was going, and replaced the notebooks with the camera bag, an extra set of clothes, the iPod with it's charger along with the mobile's.

This time I wouldn't bring the good old travel guides since I didn't have one to where I was going and I didn't actually want to buy one...well...you know me, I'm too cheap to do that.

After lunch I triple-checked everything (well...I do that): clothing, bathroom stuff, spare contacts, perscription glasses, backpack, camera bag, travel documents, plane ticket, wallet, money, bank cards, iPod, mobile phone, girlfriend's bag, sunglasses...everything there. Check. Then something clicked in my head...yes! The watch, I totally forgot about it. I got it inside the closet and placed it in my right arm (I'm a leftie, you know).

Three forty five. Time to go. I rang the cab and afterwards called my girlfriend telling her that I was about to leave home heading towards her office so she had to start wrapping things up there. A few minutes later, the taxi arrived and I left towards downtown, twenty minutes later I picked her up and we went straight to the airport.

That was a dream I had last night, I didn't wake up because of any alarm, I just did. Of course I was upset to have it interrupted like that but all I can do now is hope that it happens...soon.

Over the hills and far away

Segunda feira de manha. Existe momento maior de ressaca na semana? Duvido.

Rock me Amadeus

Afternoon at downtown Vienna. The cloudy skies above Stephansplatz were giving one of Vienna's landmarks (the Stephansdom in case you don't know) a grim character: a misleading one. This impressive gothic church, consacrated at 1147 AD, towering 136 meters above the square is everything but grim. It's colourful rooptops and the flamboyant architectural details state that this place of worship was made to impress and it works damn well.

Right next to the church, a group of street artists were performing a very weird dance, I cannot describe it to you fellow readers because I just wouldn't know where to begin.

As I walked around the busy streets of downtown Vienna I felt that the bad impression I had of the city when I first went to the Belvedere was very unfair. The decadent-old-eastern-Europe feeling of the Südbanhof area was totally different from the charming old architecture of this area. As I passed by these old buildings and the beautifully preserved monuments I started to feel Vienna's true nature and character: it's a mature city but not an old one. Austria's capital is an open minded middle aged person. I'd say that the city's character matches Austria's famous artist Falco (when at his peak naturally).

I didn't have any plans that day, all I wanted to do was to walk around Vienna without any particular place to go. If I could see a building that was able to get my attention, I'd walk towards it. And so I found the Sisi Museum at the Hofburg. I wasn't much surprised, actually I thought that it took too long for me to find anything Sisi-related, since plenty of people go to Vienna to be where she went.

As I walked through the palace I ended up in the beautiful Heldenplatz where I saw the sunset behind Vienna's historical buildings. As the night slowly came and the city lights started to show I realized that the dream was close to an end. Vienna was my last stop and I didn't want to cross the pond back "home", after all I was at home so what's the point, right?

With that idea in my mind I walked towards the Museumsquartier with its beautiful squares and buildings but that thought just would gte out of my mind. As I walked towards the U-Bahn the air became somewhat sweet and tender, I'm not able to explain but it felt like something was telling me that I was right: I was "home".

PS: Now for the yet famous super-quick-travel-tips, featuring Vienna
PS1: Like Gustav Klimt? Go to the Belvedere, they even have one Van Gogh there.
PS2: Don't judge Vienna for the Südbanhof area.
PS3: Schoss Schönbrunn: if you go snickers are a must.
PS4: Like classical music? Mozarthaus is the place to go.
PS5: Don't be on a diet since Austria is famous for their food, specially stuff with chocolate and marzipan.
PS6: Stephansdom is worth the visit.
PS7: So is Peterskirche.
PS8: Austrian beer isn't as good as the bavarian one but still pretty decent.
PS9: Don't be afraid of the Döner Kebap joints. But don't pay more than 3 euros for one.
PS10: Try Imbiss too.
PS11: Falco is still big in Austria, so expect to see his face somewhere.
PS12: When crossing the street watch for the bikes...and trams...and cars...and buses.
PS13: If you understand a bit of german you notice that the austrian accent is very funny.
PS14: Euro 2008? Austria's team sucks.
PS15: Prader: worth a visit.
PS16: Vienna Opera House: gorgeous!
PS17: In case you don't know or remember Falco here he is:

PS18: The above picture is of Vienna's Opera House and it isn't mine.
PS19: I know nobody is going to see this new addon to this post but I totally forgot about this Falco video. It shows a lot of Vienna. The song is called Vienna Calling (naturally):

PS20: RIP Falco ( 19/02/1957 - 06/02/1998)

Country roads

PS1: Tour grátis "New Berlin" recomendado.
PS2: Tour grátis "Alternate Berlin" idem
PS3: Subam o domo do Reichstag. É de graça mas cheguem cedo.
PS4: Checkpoint Charlie é fake.
PS5: Visitem o Museu Judaico
PS6: Idem para o Memorial do Holocausto
PS7: Idem para o Portal de Brandemburgo
PS8: Bebam a Berliner Weisse.
e a Opera House.
Pois bem, visitem a East Side Gallery. Mais informações no Google.

So don't tell Scotty

Going with the flow

Millenium Bridge. It's a chilly spring night over the Thames. As I face the river with it's swift waters I begin to wonder if my heart was taken away by the flow.

Since I was young I could notice clearly my life moving forward in every single side of it except one. It's been a long way from the noisy warm streets of Rio to this quiet and chilly evening at London. I always did what I had to do to reach my goals and here I am, with a good job, living in the city I fell in love at first sight years ago, with my friends at both sides of the pond and a few scattered at some other distant places but...

Why am I facing down this modern bridge looking at the clear dark waters of this water-way? Why did I chose this particular bridge? There are so many others in here...

A loud noise broke my thoughts. The Big Ben announced: it's midnight, about 26 minutes to the last tube departure of the day from Saint Paul's station nearby. I didn't care much, because I wasn't in a hurry, I could take the long walk home of taking one of the night buses that serve the city...I wasn't in a mood for a cab ride.

I dediced to return to my thoughts...why this bridge? Perhaps that it shared one strange coincidence with me: no matter how we are we're always incomplete. I always felt this way towards this particular bridge: very modern but lacking one thing which is personality. I don't lack personality, I lack something else, something that can make this quiet and chilly London evening a warm and colourful one.

Oh yes...there are no words to describe properly, they're not enough. I feel the feelings taking control of me.

It's a bit past midnight, guess I'll drop by the pub for a pint, alone this time...I need to think. Better hurry..otherwise it will be too late for that.

As I walk towards the end of the bridge my thoughts tookover. I was walking in the air..at least that's what I felt. Time was meaningless now but I kept walking without paying attention to nothing. "It's fine" I thought "The bridge is empty anyway.". But I was wrong. A few seconds after the idea came across my mind I bumped into a woman. I apologized and helped her with her things, which she dropped because of me.

I introduced myself and we started talking and walking towards the other side of the bridge, the one that I wasn't supposed to be going, as we talked I felt charmed by her eyes and her voice. I invited her for a coffee, she agreed with the condition that she picked the place. I agreed since it didn't really matter where we would be.

As we walked a cold breeze started blowing, it was London's famous unstable weather. I offered her my jacket and she took it. The wind blew away the clouds showing a gorgeous crescent I started looking above and she noticed:

"Why are you looking up like that?"
"Sorry but I'm fascinated my the moon. I never get tired of looking."

After hearing that she looked a bit surprised but kept the date, apparently she changed her mind regarding the place and she took me to this small cafe with some tables at some sort of terrace at the second floor where the crescent was shining over us warming our hearts and giving hope to those who were looking or just making the night view of London even more beautiful.

Paradise Lost

Experience, next, to thee I owe, Best guide; not following thee, I had remain'd In ignorance; thou open'st wisdom's way, And giv'st access, though secret she retire. (John Milton)

Eu respondo: paraíso, nesse caso, é a inocência.
